it will be an exciting final round tomorrow, david. we have some good young players nd some big hitters out there. jim: 6:00 in the east. some of you may just be joining us. it's the cbs golf debut for the 2014 season. the farmers insurance open from magnificent torrey pines in la jolla. gary woodland is in with a round of 70. he's the leader by one but spieth comes to the 18th, which can be birdied, looking to pull even with woodland going into the final round. andres romero shoots 67. that's the low round of the day. so here on this university day, since he did not go to college here in the united states, he's from argentina -- a nice check will be awarded of $10,000 not

golf coaches association of america. and i know greg groce, the great chief executive officer, will be very happy about that they do so much for the game. we're at the 18th. here's spieth. nick: that was a much smoother rhythm but is it -- it didn't quite turn back enough. jim: that will be a lay-up second? ian: he doesn't know that he cannot see that from the tee. nick: that's the ideal line as they send it down the lighter half of the -- is to send it down the lighter half of the fairway. the fairway turns right to left as well. so send it down the right-hand lane and hopefully it ends up in the left-hand lane. jim: of course all the drama that happened here in 2008 on this very hole. both in the fourth round and in the extra round between tiger ike itis he has
6:03 pm
gotten more dramatic, more compelling through the years. nick: h. jim: let's go down to peter kostis. peter: thanks, jim. here with marc leishman. a solid 72 today. puts you in the last group tomorrow. how was it today? >> it was a bit tougher today. the greens firmed up and got quicker and harder to roll in those putts. peter: you're going to probably get the same conditions tomorrow. have you changed your game plan at all due to the course changing? >> not a whole lot. i mean, maybe a few of the tucked pins you take a more conservative line but for the most part yeah, a conservative round here anyway. no, i haven't changed a whole lot but hopefully i can get the putts to drop tomorrow. peter: what's going to be the key tomorrow if you're going to come through and win? >> hitting the fairways and
6:04 pm
obviously holing the putts. it will be for everyone. through the middle of the round missed a few fairways and it's tough out of the rough so definitely hitting fairways is the key. peter: well done. you managed to scrape through with a 72. good luck tomorrow. >> thanks, peter. peter: back up to 18. jim: we heard some references by gary woodland about the u.s. open. it felt like u.s. open conditions. here's a little side-by-side comparison. and it's just fractions easier this week. nick: not far off. weekdays are for rising to theh allenge.

the final group. jordan spieth, if he can make four here, will get back into the tie for the lead. it's been a nice bounce back for jordan after a -- bounceback for jordan after a very rough start. you look at a young man like jordan, just 20 and how, maybe he is the next great thing in american golf. it certainly appear that is way and he's already starting to see those who are following him out of the state of texas and around the country. for example, scott scheffler, who's the reigning united states junior amateur champion from the dallas area. he certainly looks up to jordan. he's going to follow in his footsteps and go to the university of texas and i can think of another young man who i've had the honor of knowing for a handful of years from corpus christi. one of the great young people i've ever met in my life. james reagan. been battling cancer for a number of years now and he loves watching his golf and even before he had to undergo
6:07 pm
treatments at m.d. anderson, he was a member of the rice university golf team. played a lot of the junior events with the likes of jordan spieth and i just want to pass along our very best to james reagan down in corpus christi. ell him to keep the faith. david: spieth has 249 yards. 228 to carry to the front edge. nick: i'm sure he's just thinking lay-up, isn't he, david? david: yeah, from that lie. stewart cink is going to go ahead. it's not a lay-up club, i don't think. nick: no, it's a long -- must be a 3 or 2-iron.
6:08 pm
david: yeah. he has 22 to the front. -- 227 to the front. nick: he needs it 235 through he air then. david: he struck it beautifully but it started left and it's headed farther left. nick: did it kick forward? david: i believe i saw it roll onto the roof to the right. may well have gotten a very good break there. that was left going left. jim: this will give us a better idea right here. nick: well, they need to spring
6:09 pm
that roof a little tighter. that could have gone onto the green. jim: the trampoline effect with golf balls. i didn't see it there. jordan, second shot. david: he'll be laying up but colsaerts i'm not so sure about. oh, what is that? all right, that was a little closer than i thought it was going to be. we'll call it a lay-up. colsaerts has a very clean lie. just 222 to carry. looks like he's just going to op this one out too. nick: he played a sloppy one. that's a silly miss. jim: it is a bad mistake. nick: yeah. jim: just a look at tonight's lineup on cbs -- "mike & molly."
6:10 pm
"two and a half men," "ncis," and a new edition of "48 hours" tonight on america's most watched network. and again, tomorrow, sports spectacular. leads off the afternoon lineup at noon. and then college basketball. scommn penn state, women's basketball here on cbs. and tomorrow we're coming on the air at 3:00 eastern time. with the final round of the armers insurance open. well, you know, the tournament -- we talked about it a short while ago, about how prestigious a titles it is to take this tournament and the names who
6:11 pm
have claimed it before. in so many ways, the field was loaded this week. we're so accustomed to being almost spoiled seeing phil and tiger up there every year. not going the be the case this year. of course phil having to withdraw yesterday with a bad back and tiger is going too miss the secondary cut here today. but again, you take the full scope of the world players who were here. a lot of ways it feels like the launch of the year here in 2014 on the u.s. tour. nick: i agree. it sets up for some of them, first time out. the wrap oorned season, it's nearly week 10. many players still mentally start from each year. now we know the local knowledge because we know how hard it is out there. he knows out of the rough he cannot throw it up. he's got to land it over the front section and field it over
6:12 pm
the ridge. nick: this was just where the water runs off the fairway and where the rough is the thickest. 101 yards. nick: but just land it 90 -- 85 to 90. took a big swipe at that one. jim: uh-oh. nick: didn't make the green! oh, my goodness. david: the longest hitter in the field, can't get a sand wedge 80 yards. jim: talk about the lodgest hitters in the field and i know he was in that fairway bunker but do you start thinking i should have just gone ahead and tried to carry it 220? nick: not really. i call it falling asleep. when you're laying up you have
6:13 pm
to pick go through your routine. just looking at the fairway and taking a swing at it -- that's going to cost him a couple of shots now. jordan needs to be careful not to get overaggressive. david: yeah, 72 yards. again, a lower shot in here that we used to play. one stipstip-- skip up to the top. nick: we can land it 64 and try and get the next bounce at 68. jim: this kid has all the shots. a little bit of the retro shot here. nick: he's done it. easy. david: went psyches six feet too far. it carried the slope. jim: he was playing your shot, david. david: yeah. hat was stupid, obviously. this was what happened with colsaerts. nick: it even sounded like he got the ball, isn't it -- didn't it? jim: it was just so thick.
6:14 pm
ck: he cannot believe that jim: maybe another yard would have been above the ridge enough to stay up. i know what you're thinking about. kyle stanley here in 2012. nick: this was completely overplayed. he played a spinner and got everything wrong. it was the perfect storm. the upslope and it zipped back down off the slope. jim: had a three-shot lead coming into the 72nd. ended up falling in the playoff to brandt snedeker, only to win the very next week, though. what a terrific backup chapter it was to come back and win the very following week two years ago.
6:15 pm
david: interesting here. nicolas colsaerts is thinking about dropping it in the rough, which is fine. he can take the point where the ball last crossed the margin of the hard and keep it between him and the hole, go as far back as he wants. he can play that lower shot from the semiand try to run it up. nick: he needs to copy what jordan spieth just tried to play. did it well. there you go. jim: did he ever. keep going. david: that was a smart drop. jim: looks like he's going to get out of here with a six. that takes a little of the sting away. nick: i think he's had three sixes today. a six on the six, six at nine
6:16 pm
and now six at 18 for the bomber. that gives you some idea how ifficult the 5s are. jim: stewart now will play his third. we were talking earlier, before we came on the air. it seems like stewart has been around so long and of course, it's been such a drought for him since the 2009 open championship. just 40 years old, though. has some really good years ahead of him if he can get back to form and that was not the easiest shot to try and execute right there. david: no, has anyone mentioned that the rough's thick? nick: and the greens are like rock.
6:17 pm
im: this will be his fourth. it's been a long road back, though, hasn't it, since turnberry? nick: he's made a big effort as well. i've seen him working hard in the gym and trying all sorts with the swing but finally feels it's started to click and maybe gain some confidence from his results. icking away from the hole.
6:18 pm
the players talk about having a game plan. i think it would be very smart to sit with your caddie before the round and look at all the hole locations and almost decide where to miss a green. if it's in the corner, missing it on the short side is really very expensive. i think the guy who's smart enough to take the flags on what -- when he absolutely knows he can but when he thinks he can't, you have to move your target. 20 feet short, 20 feet past, wherever it's safe. where to land it, how it's going to release, where it will stop. if you could plot your way around, then we know darn well if it's the same as today, eight under might win this tomorrow. jim: yeah, 10 under was the lead coming into the day, held by this young man right here, who's
6:19 pm
chipping for birdie, a chance to tie the lead. now just hearing you kind of ell it out, that's totally faldoesque the way upped approach things in your way. nick: that was very much my last one at augusta. rock hard greens. you were standing with a wedge in your hand and it's a straight forward shot but if i land it at 125, the next bounce is at 130rks will it stop by 135? you have to accept you're going to go past and if there's no room you have to bail out. very difficult to aim 15 feet right or left with a wedge from your hand. david: sounds like a lot of math. jim: colsaerts gets his six. a little window into the brain of sir nick there, david. nick: it's very important. you're right, david. very important your caddie, my good friend fanny was good at
6:20 pm
math. you can't ask your caddie, 147 plus 19. we're going to land there, take away that. you need somebody on your side who can handle all that and deliver the numbers you're looking for without getting them in a pickle. jim: i might call on you to do my tax return. nick: tax, what's that? jim: colsaerts stepped in to get out of the line here for stewart. his for a round of 78. oh. nick: just pushed the knife in further into the wound. jim: that's the second 79 we've seen today. joining mr. woods who, again, rather shockingly, of all places, to put up a number like that. second highest of his pro career
6:21 pm
here stateside. to happen in a place where he has just absolutely dominated. spieth. for his par. ok. he'll go into the last day one back. fter that messy start. bogey-par-par. double bogey-par. would play it well the rest of the way in for 75. what are we going to see tomorrow, nick? nick: you need to bring the strategy game. that's going to be number one. the guys will talk about the obvious things. hitting the fairway is key but it's leaving those second shots or third shots in the right place. jim: when we come back, we'll give you a few more views of the good life out here in la jolla. ♪
